Deposits, late fees, and damage charges
This article explains BorrowHive product behavior. It is not legal or tax advice.
Refundable security deposits are separate from rental revenue when they are only placed as a temporary hold and later released.
If BorrowHive charges part or all of a deposit later, the reason matters. Extra rental time or a late return may be treated like an additional rental charge. Damage reimbursement, replacement cost, cleaning, service, convenience, or other claim fees may need support review before BorrowHive decides whether tax applies.
For supported Colorado paid checkout, BorrowHive does not let owners charge deposit funds directly. A BorrowHive staff reviewer must approve the claim amount and review whether tax applies before any deposit charge is made.
Damage and loss reimbursement claims can proceed only after staff records the claim as a reimbursement rather than extra rental time or a service fee.
For supported Colorado paid checkout, late-return or extra-time charges can proceed only when BorrowHive can connect the claim to the original approved rental record and confirm the same tax treatment still applies. If that record is missing or does not support the charge, the deposit charge stays blocked.
Cleaning, service, convenience, and other manual-review charges stay blocked until BorrowHive has clear rules and support steps for that charge type.
